The straight answer
The best time to visit Napa Valley is late August through October for harvest, when the vines are heavy with fruit and the valley is at its most alive, or April through May for mild weather, green vineyards, and lower prices.
Go during harvest, late August through October, if you want the valley at full energy: grapes coming off the vines, the smell of fermentation in the air, warm days and cool nights, and the whole industry at work. It is also Napa's most expensive and crowded season, with weekend hotel rates at their peak and popular wineries booked out weeks ahead.
Spring is the smart alternative. April and May bring green vineyards, bud break, wildflowers, and comfortable highs in the 70s F (about 21C to 26C), with fewer visitors and softer prices than fall. In winter the valley goes quiet: December through February is the rainy season, but the bright yellow mustard blooms between the vine rows from roughly January to March, tasting rooms are calm, and hotel prices drop to their lowest.
Summer is hot up-valley, with Calistoga often in the 90s F (about 32C to 37C), and late summer and fall sit inside California's wildfire season, which has disrupted Napa in several recent years. Check conditions close to your trip. Whatever the month, most wineries now operate by appointment, so reservations shape a Napa day more than the weather does.

Why go to Napa Valley
Some of the world's great wine
Napa's Cabernet Sauvignon put California wine on the world map, and the valley holds hundreds of wineries in an area about 30 miles long.
A food destination in its own right
From Michelin-starred dining in Yountville to casual food halls in Napa, the valley eats as well as it drinks.
Hot springs and mud baths
Calistoga's geothermal springs and mud baths have drawn visitors since the 1800s.
Easy to pair
San Francisco is about an hour and a half away, Sonoma is next door, and Yosemite and the coast are within a day's drive.
Things to do, and when to do them
Winery tastings
Most wineries now require reservations. Plan two or three per day, not five, and book popular estates weeks ahead in harvest season.
Napa Valley Wine Train
Vintage rail cars with lunch or dinner service through the valley, with some packages that include winery stops.
Robert Mondavi Winery
The Oakville estate that helped launch Napa's modern era, a good classic first stop.
Castello di Amorosa
A medieval-style castle winery near Calistoga, fun for groups and families.
Oxbow Public Market
A food hall in downtown Napa with local producers and good casual eating.
Calistoga mud baths and hot springs
A classic Napa afternoon, best after a morning of tastings.
Hot air balloon ride
Sunrise flights over the vineyards run most of the year, weather permitting. Book ahead in harvest season.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Mustard season
Roughly January to March
Wild mustard blooms bright yellow between the dormant vine rows, the most photogenic quiet-season sight.
BottleRock Napa Valley
Memorial Day weekend each year
A large music, food, and wine festival in the town of Napa. Hotels across the valley fill that weekend.
Harvest (the crush)
Late August through October
Grapes are picked and pressed. The busiest and most expensive season in the valley.
Beat the crowds
- Visit midweek. Weekend traffic on Highway 29 and weekend tasting room crowds are far heavier, and rates drop Sunday through Thursday.
- Use the Silverado Trail instead of Highway 29 to move up and down the valley with less traffic.
- Choose spring or November over peak harvest for easier reservations and lower rates.
- Book your most-wanted winery first, then build the day around it; morning slots are calmer and your palate is fresher.
Open or closed
- Most Napa wineries now operate by appointment only. Walk-ins are limited, especially on weekends and during harvest.
- Wildfire season, typically late summer into fall, has disrupted the valley in several recent years with smoke, road closures, and power shutoffs. Check conditions before you go.
- The valley is open year-round. Winter brings quieter tasting rooms, and a few smaller wineries reduce hours.
- Some wineries close on major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
With kids in tow
- Napa is adult-focused, and some wineries do not allow children. Check each winery's policy before booking.
- Family-friendly options include Castello di Amorosa, the Wine Train, Calistoga's hot springs pools, and Oxbow Public Market.
- Plan designated drivers or book a driver or tour. Driving between tastings is a serious risk.
- For homeschool families, harvest season offers lessons in agriculture, chemistry, and California history, with vineyard tours available at some wineries.
Getting there
- San Francisco (SFO) and Oakland (OAK) are about an hour and a half away, traffic permitting; Sacramento (SMF) is about an hour, and Sonoma County (STS) is about 45 minutes.
- From Texas, fly nonstop to SFO, Oakland, or Sacramento from Dallas, Houston, or Austin.
- A car or hired driver is the practical way to get around; rideshares are available but can be slow up-valley at night.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
