The straight answer

The best time to visit Mykonos is June or September: hot beach weather, a fully open island, and a working nightlife, at prices and crowd levels well below July and August, while the island largely closes from November through March.

Go in June or September, with late May and early October as the value-hunter's edges. In those months Mykonos runs at full service, the sea is warm, the beach clubs and restaurants are open, and you can still get a sunset table in Little Venice or a sunbed at Agios Sostis without a fight.

July and August are Mykonos at maximum: the party island the world knows, with sky-high room rates, booked-out restaurants, cruise ships unloading into Chora's narrow lanes, and the meltemi, the strong summer north wind, blowing hard for days at a time. If the scene is the point, that is the time. If you want the island itself, the shoulder months are better in every way that matters.

The part the glossy guides skip is winter. From roughly November through March the tourist island is effectively closed: most hotels, beach clubs, and restaurants shut, ferries and flights thin out, and boats to Delos run only when the weather and the schedule allow. Around 10,000 people live here year-round, so the town is not empty, but the Mykonos you have seen in photos is not operating. Month by month below.

Why go to Mykonos

Chora, the postcard town

A maze of whitewashed lanes, blue shutters, and bougainvillea. The tangled layout is said to have been meant to confuse pirates; now it confuses everyone else. Little Venice and the hilltop windmills are its signature views.

Delos next door

A short boat ride away is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece: the mythical birthplace of Apollo and a whole ancient trading city with mosaics, temples, and the Terrace of the Lions.

Beaches for every mood

South coast party beaches like Paradise and Super Paradise, polished clubs at Psarou, and quieter north coast sand at Agios Sostis and Fokos when the wind allows.

Nightlife with a reputation

Few small islands anywhere run a club and bar scene at this scale. It is expensive and it is loud, and in summer it is the main event.

Things to do, and when to do them

01

Delos

Boats leave from the old port in the morning and the site has almost no shade. Go on the first boat, bring water, and note that strong winds can cancel crossings.

02

Little Venice at sunset

Balconied houses right on the water facing west. Arrive an hour early for a seat, or watch from the windmills just above.

Tickets and tours →

03

The windmills of Kato Mili

The row of 16th-century windmills on the ridge above Chora. Early morning gives you them to yourself.

04

Getting lost in Chora

Walk the lanes behind Matoyianni Street before 10am, when the shops are shut and the cruise groups have not arrived.

Tickets and tours →

05

Ano Mera and Panagia Tourliani

The island's inland village and its 16th-century monastery. A calmer slice of Mykonos with a village square lunch.

Tickets and tours →

06

Armenistis Lighthouse

A windswept headland in the northwest with views to Tinos. Best at sunset if Little Venice feels too crowded.

07

North coast beaches

Agios Sostis and Fokos are low-key and undeveloped, but they face the meltemi. Save them for calm days.

Events and seasons worth planning around

All events
AprilMay

Greek Orthodox Easter

April or early May, varies by year

Candlelit processions and midnight services in Chora's churches. Many businesses time their season opening to it.

August

Feast of the Dormition (Panagia)

August 15 every year

Greece's biggest summer holiday, with church festivals and a surge of domestic visitors. The island's peak of peaks.

Beat the crowds

  • Check the cruise ship schedule before planning a day in Chora. On multi-ship days, do the town before 10am or after 6pm and spend the middle at a beach.
  • Go to Delos on the first boat of the morning. The site is exposed and hot by midday, and later boats are fuller.
  • Stay outside Chora, in Ornos, Agios Stefanos, or near Ano Mera, for calmer evenings and easier parking.
  • Book restaurants in Little Venice and the top beach clubs well in advance in July and August; in June and September, a day or two ahead usually works.

Open or closed

  • Mykonos is sharply seasonal. Most hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs operate from about late April to mid October, and many close entirely from November through March.
  • Delos is reached only by boat, and crossings are canceled when the wind is strong, which happens most often during the July and August meltemi.
  • Winter ferry schedules are much thinner and rough seas cause cancellations, so leave a buffer day before any onward flight.
  • Some big beach clubs open later and close earlier than the hotels; if a specific venue matters, confirm its season dates.

With kids in tow

  • Mykonos works for families if you pick the right beaches: Agios Ioannis, Ornos, and Platis Gialos have calm, shallow water and easy facilities. Skip the party beaches.
  • Delos is fascinating for kids who like myths and ruins, but the sun is intense. Go early with hats and plenty of water.
  • June and September are the best months with children: warm water, open everything, and less of the late-night party noise.
  • For homeschool families, pair Delos with the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos in Chora and a unit on the Delian League.

Getting there

  • Mykonos Airport (JMK) has short flights from Athens year-round and direct seasonal flights from many European cities in summer. There are no nonstops from the US.
  • Ferries run from Piraeus and Rafina in Athens, taking roughly two and a half to five hours depending on the boat. Rafina is closer to Athens airport.
  • Mykonos connects easily by ferry to Tinos, Naxos, Paros, and Santorini for island-hopping in season.

Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.

Mykonos timing, quick answers

What is the best month to visit Mykonos?

June or September. Both have hot beach weather, a fully open island, and a real nightlife scene, with lower prices and far fewer people than July and August.

What is the cheapest time to visit Mykonos?

Late April through May and early to mid October are the cheapest times when the island is still open. Winter is cheaper still, but most hotels and restaurants are closed.

Is Mykonos open in winter?

Barely, for visitors. From about November through March most hotels, beach clubs, and restaurants close. The year-round community keeps some tavernas and shops going, but it is not the Mykonos most people come for.

When is the party season in Mykonos?

July and August are the peak, with the season building from June and tapering through September. Mid August, around the August 15 holiday, is the absolute height.

How windy is Mykonos?

Very, in summer. The meltemi north wind blows most strongly in July and August and can last several days, roughening north-facing beaches and canceling Delos boats. The south coast beaches are more sheltered.

Is Mykonos too crowded in August?

For many people, yes. It is the most crowded and expensive month, with cruise passengers adding to the peak. If you want the scene, it is the time; if you want the island, choose June or September.
