The straight answer
The best time to visit Lake Como is late April to early June or September to early October, when the villa gardens are open and blooming, the ferries run full schedules, and the summer crowds and heat have not yet peaked.
Go from late April to early June, or in September to early October. Spring is when the azaleas and rhododendrons at Villa Carlotta put on their famous show and the lake is green and fresh; September brings warm, settled weather, calmer ferries, and the grape and olive harvest in the hills.
July and August are beautiful but busy and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms rolling off the mountains, Bellagio and Varenna packed with day-trippers from Milan, and hotel rates at their highest. August around Ferragosto is the peak of it.
Winter is the part most guides skip. From about November to mid March, the great villas close, many of the grand lakefront hotels in Bellagio and Tremezzo shut for the season, and the ferries switch to a thin winter timetable. The town of Como itself stays lively, especially during its Christmas festival, but the classic villa-and-ferry trip is a spring-to-autumn affair.

Why go to Lake Como
Villas and gardens
Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta, and Villa Melzi are some of the finest lakeside gardens in Europe, and several are reachable only or best by boat.
A lake you travel by ferry
The public ferries tie Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, and Tremezzo together. Hopping between them is the whole rhythm of a visit.
Alps and Italy in one view
Steep green mountains drop straight into the water, with snow on the higher peaks into spring. Hiking trails start right behind the villages.
Close to Milan
Como is under an hour from Milan by train, so the lake pairs naturally with a city stay or a longer northern Italy route.
Things to do, and when to do them
Villa del Balbianello
On a wooded point near Lenno, reached by boat or a walk. Visits are limited and it typically closes one weekday, so check the schedule.
Villa Carlotta
Famous for its azaleas and rhododendrons from roughly mid April to mid May. Right on the ferry line at Tremezzo.
Bellagio
The lake's centerpiece town. Arrive by the first ferry or stay the night to see it without the day crowd.
Varenna and Villa Monastero
The prettiest arrival by boat on the eastern shore, and the lakeside garden walk at Villa Monastero.
Lake ferries (Navigazione Laghi)
A day pass on the central lake is the best value way to see it. Faster hydrofoils cost more.
Greenway del Lago
An easy walking route through the villages of the western shore, roughly from Colonno toward Griante, using ferries or buses back.
Como to Brunate funicular
A short ride above Como town to a viewpoint over the southern arm of the lake.
Events and seasons worth planning around
Azalea season at Villa Carlotta
Roughly mid April to mid May, varies with the spring
The garden's famous flowering tunnels and slopes. The peak shifts by a week or two each year.
Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este
A weekend in spring, usually May
One of the world's most prestigious classic car shows, held at Villa d'Este and nearby Villa Erba. Hotels around Cernobbio fill fast.
Sagra di San Giovanni, Isola Comacina
A weekend in late June, near June 24
Fireworks over the lake's only island, with the shoreline lit by traditional small lamps. Ferries and viewpoints fill up.
Il Lombardia cycling race
Autumn, usually October
One of cycling's five Monuments, often passing the Madonna del Ghisallo cyclists' chapel above Bellagio.
Citta dei Balocchi, Como
Late November to early January
Como town's Christmas festival of lights, markets, and events. The best reason to visit the lake in winter.
Beat the crowds
- Sleep in Varenna, Bellagio, or Menaggio rather than day-tripping from Milan. The villages are quiet before 10am and after the last day-trip ferries leave.
- Do the most famous villas at opening, then spend midday on the less-visited shores like the eastern shore north of Varenna or the far southern arm near Lecco.
- Avoid weekends in June through September if you can. Milanese day-trippers fill the ferries and lidos on Saturdays and Sundays.
- Take the slow ferry instead of the hydrofoil when lines are long. It stops more often but usually has more room and better deck views.
Open or closed
- Most of the major villas, including Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta, open from about mid to late March to early November, and are closed in winter. Confirm dates each year.
- Many of the grand lakefront hotels in Bellagio, Tremezzo, and Cernobbio close from about November to March.
- Ferries run all year but with a much thinner winter timetable; the fast hydrofoils and some routes are seasonal.
- Lidos (swimming clubs) generally open from late May or June to early September.
With kids in tow
- Kids tend to love the ferries: a day pass makes the boat itself the activity, with village playgrounds and gelato at each stop.
- Lidos with pools and roped-off lake swimming are the easiest summer family days; the lake gets deep quickly.
- Villa gardens are stroller-friendly in parts but steep in others; Villa Carlotta is easier than Balbianello, which involves a hilly walk.
- For homeschool families, the Alessandro Volta connection in Como (the Tempio Voltiano museum) is a neat stop for a science unit.
Getting there
- Milan Malpensa (MXP) is the main gateway, with nonstops from several US hubs including New York. Milan Linate and Bergamo also work for European connections.
- Trains run from Milan to Como in about 40 minutes to an hour, and from Milano Centrale to Varenna in about an hour. Varenna connects to Bellagio by ferry.
- Driving is possible but the lakeside roads are narrow and parking in the villages is scarce in summer. Most visitors do fine with trains and ferries alone.
Packing? Packing cubes and the airport kit.
